January 2010
As the days are getting longer, we are all looking forward to spring again. It won’t be long till the round bales are replaced by fresh green grass and dandelions!
Since the last newsletter, a whole bunch of changes have happened on the farm.
Sales:
Congratulations goes to Holly Burns for the purchase of Ironhill bred Dutch filly (sire Ikoon), Divinity Hill aka Dessa. Dessa moved to Grayton Farms in January, right here in Priddis http://www.alexandergrayton.com/home.cfm . Dessa is destined to be a jumper, showing wonderful form already as a 2 year old in the chute. Holly is very excited about this young prospect. We wish Holly all the best with her new purchase.
Horse Exchange:
We did a horse swap in January. Irene (Junior), Irene Hill’s niece who rides with Crystal Kroetch at Carousel sure lucked out! She is aiming at the Junior FEI classes this year and hopefully toward the Young Riders test in the following years. Montevideo, Irene’s (senior) PSG/I1 horse was shipped to Carousel in January to be her ride. This is a match made in heaven. Monty and Irene Jr are bonding very well; we look forward to watching this pairing in the show ring this year.
Moxie returned to Ironhill from Carousel. Moxie is being ridden by Irene Senior while Irene is undergoing treatment for Breast Cancer. Moxies’ smooth ride and phenomenal temperament make this a perfect match for Irene at this time. Irene is hoping that her treatment will end early enough that she will be able to make her 2010 appearance back in the show ring by August with Moxie. A pretty lofty goal considering the circumstances, but one has to have goals!
Valentino II (aka Rudy Senior) is being ridden by Chrissy Austermann. Gdansk (aka Rudy Junior) is being ridden by Corinna King. Thank you, ladies, for keeping my horses going.
Offered for Sale:
Gemma is away being professionally started by Grant McKinney and will be ready for sale in a couple of months. Gemma is a lovely child’s or small ladies hunter prospect. She has lovely form in the chute, learns quickly and is very careful. She has the movement for lower level dressage, flat classes and equitation classes as well. Holly Burns and Alexander Grayton will act as agents when this mare is ready to show.
Kim Berenbaum has a wonderful pony for sale, please see our website for details. This pony does it all and is a very well trained horse. Her manners are impeccable.
Coaching and Clinics:
Deanna Cullen has been training and coaching at Ironhill, replacing Irene during her treatment periods. Thank you Deanna!
We have had a couple of clinics at Ironhill in January:
Joni Lynn Peters came and did a shared clinic with Ironhill and Black Whiskey Ranch. Black Whiskey Ranch http://www.blackwhiskeyranch.com/ hopes to continue having Joni back once she returns from the US. If you are interested in riding with Joni, contact Bev directly. We wish Joni good luck in her quest to represent Canada in the future.
Crystal Kroetch has agreed to do monthly clinics at Ironhill. We are all very excited to have her come to the farm and help us out. Presently, Crystal is in Florida with Lymrix for a couple of months....we wish her all the best in her quest to represent Canada in the future.
In closing........Ironhill (Irene and Ron) wishes at this time to thank all the staff, clients and friends during this difficult time. Spring will be here soon, and nothing heals better than fresh air, fresh grass and the sun!
Good Health to you all! Irene

News for July 2009
2009 has already been a very exciting year at Ironhill. We have had numerous clinics at the farm. Particular to note the return of Cindy Ishoy to the farm held in April. See Carrots and Cocktails for details on Cindy’s clinic. It is our hope that she returns this fall.
The farm’s breeding program has been put on hold for a couple of few years to allow Irene to focus on training and riding. Our broodmares have been sold to Century Ranches to continue their breeding careers. www.centuryranches.ca
Shelley Malbeuf and Ann Conquergood spent 2 months lazing in the California sun. OK, not exactly lazing; but showing 3 horses and training under Dirk Glitz! Congratulations, ladies on this fantastic adventure.
Show Highlights for the Ironhill trainers so far:
At the AJYR Show in Red Deer:
Valentino (owned and ridden by Irene Hill) placed, 3rd, 3rd and 2nd with scores of mid 60’s at Level 1.
Liverpool (Hans, owned by Ann Conquergood and ridden by Shelley Malbeuf was 1st and 2nd in Level 2 Open.
At the CC/ADA show in Claresholm:
Valentino (owned and ridden by Irene Hill) was Open Show Champion and Level One Open Champion (with scores of up to 74%!)
Moxie (owned and ridden by Irene Hill) debut at Level 3; with scores in the low 60’s.
At the CA/ADA show at Anderson’s:
Valentino was Open 1st Level Champion with scores in the high 60’s. This horse continues to surprise and delight us.
Montevideo (owned and ridden by Irene) achieved another over 60% in I1 clinching his 4th required marks for his Gold Intermediare Dressage Canada Rider/Horse Medal.
Dante (Dream of Thunder) owned by Janny Freeze and ridden by Shelley Malbeuf was Open Fourth Level Champion.
Doll Pearl (owned by Ann Conquergood and Mary Webber-Blatz) was 1st and 2 times 2nd place in Level 3 with scores in the mid to high 60’s.
Our adult amateurs did excellent as well at all these shows, with good showings from both Heather and Ann Conquergood.
Our next shows will be the Gold Rush and the Red Deer Provincials and Regionals.
Other news:
In 2008, Ironhill Equestrian Centre purchased an additional 60 acres, which allowed us to expand the trails. Over the 300 acres, we have just opened up a new 10 km trail around the property. The ladies are really enjoying going for a safe hack around the property without having to ride on the road.
We are almost finished all construction on the property. The new dug out (lake) is nearly completed, bet my neighbours will be happy that the noise of the backhoe is almost over. A new hayshed will be built this fall. And hopefully I won’t dream up anything else to build.
New faces at Ironhill:
Stacy Williams has come to visit Canada this summer. She brought along her mare Charisma and (gorgeous) yearling Frisco Bay, husband Dow and her dear dog BJ. Stacy has a very successful dressage equine training business in Utah. http://scwdressage.com/ They have rented a condo in Canmore; which allows Dow to follow his passion of climbing and still close enough for Stacy to work her horses at Ironhill. Please join me in welcoming Stacy back for this short visit.
Andrea Raimondi brought her lovely Trakehner mare Twiggy in for training with Shelley. What a sweet mare! We really enjoy Andrea as well.
Chrissy Austermann has returned to work with the team at Ironhill for her summer break from university. Excellent!
We have 5 new clients coming in to us in August…but those names have to wait till the next newsletter!
Finally,
We have a couple of training and boarding spots opening up in September, if you are interested in bringing your horse in for training, short or long term, please contact Ironhill Equestrian Centre, Irene at 403 931 3268.
Have an excellent summer! Ride safe, live well and good health!
Irene

July 2008
Presenting our 2 foals for 2008. We are thrilled to have 2 lovely foals in our 1st year crop at Ironhill Equestrian Center. Laura (KWPN, Keur Elite Sport Dressage, Dam Sire Wellington) gifted us with a fabulous colt by Silvano N (Ellen Bjonte’s World Cup Dressage Stallion) in May. And Peony Hill (KWPN, Dam Sire Kadans) gifted us with an adorable filly by IKOON (approved KWPN stallion, standing at Creekside Farms) in June. Both foals are healthy and happy….it is surely a dream come true to have both of them here at Ironhill Equestrian Center, proof positive that great foals can be “MADE IN CANADA”.

Moxie, Canadian Han 5 year old (Out of Lexus (Dam Sire Lauries Crusador and By Mr. A), won the FEI 5 year old championships at the CA/ADA show last weekend, scoring many 8’s for submission, temperament, collectability/extensions in the trot and canter. Moxie was also 1st Level Open Champion at the CC/ADA show scoring in the high 60’s and low 70’s. This mare is a joy to own. She is always willing to give 110% in all her work.
Montevideo, Canadian Han 10 year old, (Dam Sire Wenzel 1, Sire Mr A) Irene’s Advanced Level partner, did well at the CA/ADA show, with scores in the 60’s.
In June, we hosted the Holger Münstermann (http://www.holger-muenstermann.de/) clinic at Ironhill Equestrian Center. Approximately 30 auditors took advantage of his vast experience, keen eye and approach. We are very pleased that he agreed to make the vast effort to return to us on a 3 X/year basis. Our next clinic with Holger is expected in October 2008.
In June, Irene Hill retired from EnCana Corporation in order to pursue her life long dream of working full time with horses.
On July 1st, it is our pleasure to announce that Shelley Malbeuf has moved to Calgary and has officially joined the Ironhill Equestrian Center team. Shelley is a level 3 Canadian Coach (dressage), was a working student with Holger for 3 years in Germany, has extensive experience starting and training horses. She will be mentoring both Irene Hill and Deanna Cullen in pursuing their coaching certification.
The Ironhill Equestrian Center team is accepting new clients’ horses for training. As well, we will travel to your farm to assist you in pursuing your dressage goals. Please contact us if you wish to discuss further.
Ironhill Equestrian Center is also accepting bookings for externally managed clinics. If you have a clinician and need a place to host your clinic; please consider our facility. The facility can host many different venues, jumping, reining, dressage etc.
Happy Riding!

March 16, 2008
We are almost into April, where has the time gone already? The weather this spring in Calgary has been warm and friendly and normally, I would be thrilled with this warm weather; if it were not for all the new construction. There is mud everywhere! Well, like all things, this will pass, and soon the scars and marks of construction will be history in no time.
On February 11th, we moved horses, equipment and household to the new facility. It will take some getting used to the new facility; we were in our old place for almost 20 years.
Other news…..We purchased a new broodmare in January, Laura, from Jason and Jennifer from Century Ranches . Laura was imported from Holland a few years ago and has had several fabulous foals. Laura is presently in foal to Olympic Silvano N. Her foal is due early May. What a lovely mare this is! I am planning on riding her this winter. She might even fitten up enough to be my second Advanced horse! I am sure I will learn a lot from her.
Peony Hill (KWPN, CSHA) is also in foal to Ikoon. Ikoon (KWPN, CSHA, CWB) stands at Creekside www.creeksidefarm.ca . We are expecting her foal in mid June.
It will be very exciting to have 2 foals on the farm again!
In March, Holger Muenstermann came to our farm on his way back to Germany from Wellington. He spent some time in Florida coaching Canadians Jaimey and Tina Irwin and then swung over to Calgary to join us. Holger’s clinic marked our first official clinic at Ironhill Equestrian Center; and Holger’s second visit to Calgary. We had just over 20 auditors come through the facility, which was excellent considering it was mid week. Riders and auditors enjoyed the clinic immensely. Holger has a very keen eye; and he brought out the very best in both riders and horses. He took the time to leave each rider with a full understanding of their homework and action plans. Ironhill Equestrian Center plans to have Holger return 2 to 3 times a year, with the next visit slated for June 2008.
Our sales page will be updated shortly.
- Moxie (Premium Hanoverian Mare) is back on the market for sale. The videos on the website are of her when she was 3 months undersaddle. She had a very good 1st season, 2007, in Training Level and 4 year old FEI, scoring well into high 60’s and 70’s. Watch for her in the FEI 5 year old this year! This is a very elegant, mare 15’3, most suitable for a small amateur. Her movement is smooth, easy to sit! Her ground manners are impeccable, and she is very uncomplicated, truly a joy to own.
- Gemma (2 year old CSHA filly) is still available for sale. She is going to be a very elegant mare when she matures.
- In April, we will have a new client’s horse in for conditioning, training and resale: R.D. Palfrey, Black, 16hh with 4 white socks, 11 year old IMPORTED dutch gelding, competed at 3rd level a few years ago. We expect this horse to be an excellent value for a small amateur or junior FEI horse. This horse was shown extensively by a junior.
Ironhill Equestrian Centre, Irene & Ron Hill, would like to personally thank all the friends and family for all the support and well wishes in our move!
Enjoy the spring season and Happy Riding!
Irene Hill

August 7, 2007
Its August already, its hard to believe time sure flies. Since our last news......here's what has happened at Ironhill.
- The construction of the new Ironhill facility, house, barn and arena are well started. Check out the construction pictures of the arena going up. It doesn't look like much now, but the journey to get here was amazing.
- Vrolijk and Peony Hill have been leased to Linda Ackerman of Creekside Farms as recipient broodmares.
- Bombay, the CWB owned by Deanna Cullen has been sold this month to a lovely local young lady, with her focus keenly on the hunter/jumper ring.
- Gemma is offered for sale, new pictures are coming. This very elegant Gervantus II CSHA yearling (Oldenberg/Dutch) is turning out to be a very lovely filly, both in terms of conformation and temperment. She is extremely easy to handle and is very people friendly. If you are looking for an excellent hunter prospect, I think she is well worth a second look.
- Montevideo and Irene have entered the dressage ring in PSG for the first time this year at the CCADA show in Claresholm and then again at Kestrel Ridge. What an exciting moment to finally get to wear tails in the ring.
- We have had several clinics at Ironhill this year, Shelley Malbeuf has come down from Edmonton to help us pursue our goals. These clinics are very well attending with quite a waiting list. If you would like to know more about these clinics, please email us. Again, one of the big goals of the new facility in 2008, is to establish Ironhill as one of the key venues for clinics and seminars in the discipline of Dressage....so keep you eyes on our website for new information on that.
- Irene Hill is actively pursuing her Coaching certification and continues to work towards her Equine Certificate at the University of Guelph this fall.
- Irene Hill and Montevideo were extremely fortunate to participate at Dressage University this spring. It was an amazing experience to work with Edward Gal, Jane Savoie and Cara Whitham, and of course the rest of the instructors.
- We are pleased to announce that our original farm in Priddis has been sold, closing date February 1st, 2008 to a lovely equally as horse crazy family! We sincerely hope that they will love it as much as we have.
We are looking forward to the Western Regional Championships at Red Deer, hope to see you there!
February 25, 2007
Congratulations to Jacqueline Colbourne of Cochrane, Alberta for the purchase of Western Lady, KWPN 4 year old mare. Ginger will be moving to their farm in March at which time Ginger will start her career as a hunter/jumper. We are very excited for Jacqueline and Ginger, we expect good things out of this partnership.

February 14, 2007
Irene & Montevideo have recently been awarded ADA 2006 4th Level Freestyle Highpoint Champion and CADORA 2006 4th Level Champion. Monty is turning out to be a fabulous horse. What a great year 2006 was for this team!
Irene has also decided to take Moxie "off the market". Irene & Moxie will be challenging the 4 Year Old FEI Young Horse Program in 2007 as well as Training Level. Moxie will also be presented at the Hannovarian Mare Inspections at Spruce Meadows this fall. Moxie is turning out to be an outstanding young mare. She is extremely confident, trainable, balanced and steady. Her amiable, can-do attitude is an absolute joy to ride.
2007 is going to be a really fun show year for Irene, 2 great rides and lots of great new experiences!
On the construction front: Ironhill Equestrian Centre has signed th contract to build the 28,000 square foot facility on the new location. Construction to be started in May 2007 with completion date expected in Early Spring 2008. The building contract was awarded to IronWood Building Services.
