Irene Hill

ireneIrene Hill’s experience in the horse industry extends beyond 35 years. Her experience runs from Pony Club to Three Day Eventing to Hunters & Jumpers, Steeplechasers/Thoroughbreds and now most recently Dressage.

Irene started riding at the age of 4, on her first Shetland pony named Tiny. Tiny was just one of many ponies and horses that Irene rode and trained in order for her to move through the ranks of Pony Club in the Toronto and North York district in Ontario. She was also an avid member of the Toronto and North York Hunt Club for many years. During this time, she competed very successfully in 3 day eventing, and the hunter and jumper Ontario A circuit.

Irene moved to Calgary in 1982, and took a several years sabbatical from horses in order to focus on raising her son and her new career in the oil and gas industry. Irene retired from the Oil and Gas Industry in 2008, as Information Technology Manager at a major oil and gas company in Calgary.  Now she can focus 100%  of her attention on her riding career.

In 1988, Irene returned to her love of horses and purchased a very rank frightful off the track thoroughbred for $1 named EASTWOOD. Irene and Eastwood grew to trust each other and went on to enjoy great success on the AHHS circuit, and at Spruce Meadows and Brandon shows. This partnership achieved several championships and year end high point provincial championships in LOW and TRAINING jumpers. EASTWOOD turned out to be a solid Power and Speed Jumper.  Who through to his retirement years continued to carry other amateurs to like awards.  He was returned to Irene upon retirement and passed away on our farm at the ripe age of 23.
In 1995, Irene turned her focus solely towards dressage. Irene is developing her dressage riding career through the help of several very insightful coaches, all of which have and will continue to contribute greatly to her development.

Her coaches are/were as follows, Val Hellerud, Joely Mann, Sheri Demonceaux and Shelley Malbeuf.

Irene was able to participate in numerous clinics with Paul Belasik, Lorraine Chappell, Stephen Clarke, Tom Dvorak, Edward Gal, Holger Munstermann, Cindy Ishoy, Gina Smith, Anky van Grunsven and Lisa Wilcox.

Irene had lots of fun in the dressage ring with her beautiful black Han gelding "Webster". Irene & Webster's career highlight was Medium 4 Western Regional Champion.  Webster was a very stoic horse, proud and strong, forever the show horse.  Webster passed away on the farm in 2008 at ripe age of 25.

Irene’s present Advanced horse, is the very successful Montevideo, who was Amateur Western Regional Champion/Reserve Champion at every level, every year until 2008.   In 2008, Irene moved from Amateur status to Open Status and moved into the advanced levels.

Irene & Montevideo have also been awarded the Dressage Canada:

  • Gold Level PSG in 2008 (has already achieved the requirements for Intermediare Gold in 2009)
  • Silver Level 3 Freestyle Medal.
  • 3 time Lauren Dilanni National Award Winner

Irene has a new mount, Valentino II.  This young horse has been to 3 shows in 2009, and at Level 1 is achieving marks in the high 60s, low 70’s, with a top score of 74%.  He was show champion at the CC/ADA show and First Level Champion at the CA/ADA show.  What an exciting future this combination has.

Irene is near completion of her Equine Sciences Certificate through the University of Guelph with course average over 90%.. She will also be pursuing her Coaching Level 2 Dressage Certification in 2009/10.
